Waiting for Dawn.

It is dark as I write this. The dawn discovery of the empty tomb still awaits. We wait silently. There are no words for this Saturday.

Thursday we remember the Last Supper with words and actions.  Friday we sing, we pray and we mourn. Saturday has no words, no ritual, no actions. There is nothing for us to do.There is nothing we can do.

That we have nothing to do does not mean that God is silent and inactive. God, on Holy Saturday, is active but we do not see, we do not speak. We can receive the mystery of salvation and Resurrection as gift on Sunday. We find the empty tomb. We stand amazed. All we can say is thank you.

The church and theologians have, over the centuries, had plenty to say about salvation and resurrection. Theories abound. How could this be? What has God done for us? How exactly are we saved?  How does resurrection happen?  But we do not know precisely, at least in this world. We do not know exactly what God has done. We do not know how all this works. We cannot outline the steps or define the process. We find the empty tomb. We only know that Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again.

The sun rises. The tomb is empty. The risen Christ calls us by name. Gift given to us. A gift of great price. A gift of great love. A gift beyond imagination and understanding. The mystery of faith.

Christ is risen!
